NO faults since April and car runs as normal. Faults start again in June with flashing coil on dash.

Since January I do not clear DTC's....only scan to read them.

June 2022.....Flashing coil on dash.....note - this can happen before I start the car.
DTC's not cleared last time....so same faults shown....nothing new.
Radio still turned off since January

I turn ignition off pull out key, reinsert and start and no issues.

Car ran as normal untill 13 days later then flashing coil and scan shows same fault.

Car taken to Audi Indy specialist...as car has never had emissions software upgrade and I do not wish to risk local VW upgrading software.

29th June...something new....2 more Engine fault codes, speed sensor and Cyl 3 misfire.

I cannot recall if I was driving or not but now I sometimes get engine fault symbol on dash as well as flashing coil....sometimes coil only sometime eng only and sometimes before I start car and car goes into limp mode.

Had this a few times so booked car into a good VAG indy specialist who has official software.

Indy explained 4 sensors on the 5V circuit with the fault. Tested each sensor and all working ok and wiring seems fine though known wiring issues with earlier build version and not my build version. Told Eng speed sensor can fail but rare and he did not think it so in this case, other 2 sensors (not told what) in his experience have never failed. The 4th is the EGR and he was surprised at 11 years old and 60k+ miles it had never been replaced. He could not be certain but suspected EGR. All DTCs reset and suggested I try it for a few weeks. Told to bring it back if it goes into limp mode and not to turn engine off.

Next day come to start car and same faults as below are back.
Sometimes pull key and restart and fault gone.....but drive a short distance and coil and or eng light come on and sometimes limp mode.
On one occasion engine running, limp mode with same faults as below except no cyl 3 misfire reported, I reset DTC's and immediate rescan only showed Engine Speed Sensor fault...nothing else. So clearing DTC's did not clear all faults.
Tried quite a few scans and resets of DTC's over last week or so as almost every day now car goes into limp mode either on start up or soon afterwards. What I have noticed is car revs at 950 when start with a fault....clear DTC's (engine running) and revs drop to 750.

I can always start the car without too much trouble, not first fire as when car was ok, but immediately after that. On turn off engine does not immedaitely stop as when it was ok, but immediately after that.

So if it was speed sensor would the car idle fine (even if at 950 rpm) and drive ok when no fault and still run smoothly but no power in limp mode?

I see no EGR faults with Vagcom......but is the 950rpm idle when coil or eng light is on indicating its the EGR?

Finally, more recently scanning and clearimg DTC's afterwards, the faults usually show random 1, 2 or 3 of 3 or sometimes no Steering Wheel faults......so I'm guessing this is not the fault.
Always reports Engine Sensor Ref Voltage B and mostly Speed sensor, either speed sensor and misfire, or no speed sensor and just misfire (once so far) ...so I'm guessing cyl 3 misfire is not the issue.

Where I'm at now is thinking of pulling battery and take off ECU connector and spray contact cleaner on pins and plug and reassemble.

    Any help or comments appreciated.

If I was doing the job I would be recommending a new ECU

    Thanks Crasher.
As you pointed out last time regarding ECU. It sort of makes the most sense to me too.
Is it worth (and can it be done...by who?....any recommendations) considering a repair?
Is it worth considering second hand unit?...will it need programming? (I assume the unit needs to be identical model number etc)
If new....does it need programing...or DIY remove battery, remove ECU, install new ECU then battery and go?
If it needs programming...is this dealer only? (and I do not want emissions upgrade).

Is it worth just part ex-ing (I'd declare the fault) for another golf....what could I expect dealer to knock off the car value?

Bummer!....I love the car too...its been cherished....even indy commented on its condition.

    Thanks again for any advice.

    Kind Regards

It wasn't clear whether you had ruled out a physical problem with the 5V wire that might be giving intermittent problems.

Re the ECU, if the flash is good then most decent professional / amateur tuners should be able to do a straight clone of the original. That should fix it if it was a bad (other) chip, connection, etc in the ECU.

EDIT: Was thinking it was a Golf 5, but then re-read it is a 6. May be a bit harder but there are still places that do the equivalent ECU clone work.

We have given up on ECU repair people, they are all useless. I have diagnosed a fair few of these being faulty but only a coupe had it done, most sell the car.

    Thanks VAG-Abound.
Indy could not find any issue with wiring...all looked good and no chafing. I'd looked at this already months ago and at one stage thought it might be so as after messing about with wires and adding spiralwrap I did get a period without issues. But that was last September.
More recently (last few weeks), Indy has had it and I've looked again, even messing with wires while wife observed engine running and flashing coil. Nothing changed.
Also Indy cited earlier version of my model, I take it as same golf MK6, just earlier build with different wiring loom, did have a history of wiring faults but not my model.
Indy also pulled sensor plugs to examine for corrosion - all ok.

So last few weeks almost daily, when I come to start it ....Engine fault reported (more recently) and engine light as well as flashing coil which I've had now and then for over 1 year....but now almost daily and now limp mode too.

So short of splitting wiring loom and tracing each wire/sensor related to 5V wire (which I belive indy did...that is check wires at sensor point with a needle probe through insulation as well as viewing signals with software as he has access to wiring diagram), what do I do?

If I had a wiring diagram I guess I could trace the cable....even fit a new one in parallel...but still uses existing plugs.

So only job left I think I can do is pull battery, pull ECU plug, clean contacts with spray contact cleaner, same for plug, then reconnect, then battery and hope for the best!

Thanks again for advice and comments.

All I can say is that people with the right skills could move your config to a 2nd hand unit. If I were you I'd ask for a "bundle" of them getting the right ECU, cloning it and fitting it. There's no point you buying a used ECU with no way to make it work, and they may want to choose what they use.

I have no idea on their success or reputation, but this came up in a search as an example of some people being able to describe what needs to be done rather than start blind: VAG Coding - Component Protection - JK Car Electrics.
