Hi - looking for comparisons on costs for Cambelt & pump replacement.

My usual independent guy cannot do the job so I’ve had a price from local VW main dealer. Quoted price is £789

More than I was expecting - I was thinking around 500-600 tops from the main dealer. This is a 1.6 B8 2015. They’ve quoted a days labour.

What should I be looking to pay for this work?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Cheers
    Phil

£550-£600 would be typical but you often come across a leaking front crank seal and this is a lot more additional work.

In our local VW dealer it was £549 about 12 months ago. Check how long it's guaranteed for as well. Can be 12 months but I recently saw 5 years advertised by one dealer (no doubt with the requirements of an annual service).

If a genuine kit is used and fitted at a VAT registered garage, the warranty is two years covered by the make specific dealer.

Just checked the VW website and prices have not changed. £494 for the belt change or £549 for the belt change and a new water pump.

Thanks for the replies. My local VW dealer pricing of £789 for this job seems in line with the Main VW website for cars older than 3 years. Dealer won’t budge on price.

I’ve booked in with a not so local VW specialist and the quote is looking nearer to £425 all in with genuine parts.

Fingered crossed it’s straightforward - no signs or exiting oil leak but I guess this won’t always be obvious.

    Thanks again 🙏

Have the official cambelt change time and mileage recommendations changed on the 2.0 TDI engine in the last 12 months like on the 1.5 tsi and 1.0mpi?

Yes, VAG UK now tell the truth, in the case of a CR TDI the interval is 24000 kilometres (149k miles ish) and the time interval can be between 8 or 20 years depending what the data says in the Digital Service System, I.E. cars without a service book. I can tell from the VIN and milage. Personally I find 149k miles quite disturbing, especially as we have seen random EA288 failure at less than five years and 50k miles. Because of the new VAG UK stance we are trying to get a feel for what to recommend as telling someone 149k miles or 10 years could land us liable.

Our 2018 car is 6 years old and has done 49,000 miles. I was planning on getting it done at the eight year milestone if we keep the car and by then it will have done about 65,000 miles.
