Quick synopsis: Driving along, complete loss of power, engine stopped. Would not start again. AA called, they got it firing up with "quick start" spray but it would not run, he said it's a fuel pump in the tank problem.
Actions so far: Fuses are OK, checked and tested. I have replaced the in tank fuel pump, drivers side (RH) but there is no pump priming (if it does that) nor any fuel pump "noise" before or during cranking. The only time I can here the pump working is immediately after cranking for aprox 3 seconds.
What to do? I'm not incompetent when playing on these (I had the old 2.5 A6 allroad) and I detest the £75/hr (plus VAT) at Audi for them to give me 4 pages of error readout and still not be able to state what needs to be done to fix it. There are sooooo many potential areas to be checked so before I get stuck into relays, pumps, air leaks / bleeding / O ring replacements etc etc etc, all of that I have seen here, has anyone had a similar problem and can clearly advise what they did to fix it.
    Many thanks..

Is the pump belt ok? When was that last changed? And did aa inspect it?
They can also snap the fuel pump bracket clean off the engine and fracture the fuel lines in the engine bay, but that would be pretty obvious due to fuel everywhere

if you do dabble, and with a car that age a good reader would be an investment. if the vag com at 2 or 300 is too much the next best i would say is obdeleven - sub £100 depending on the option you go for could be closer to £50, pay as you go apps or expert which is open but requires coding skill.
with this you can do output tests and turn on the pump on in the tank ( handy for bleeding after a filter change) and see if it does work, check the fuel rail pressure etc to help you track the fault down.

Thanks for the response guys, I have a Konnwei OBDII reader that shows no errors / faults at all....

In relation to the post by Darren earlier, the belt at the front of the pump looks fine (but I will strip the front end down and have a good look) the AA didn't inspect it, and there are no fractured fuel lines / fuel in the engine bay...

Daft questions: I have read that the "in tank" fuel pump is NOT the main "pump" for the fuel from the tank to the engine but it is the mechanical pump / injector on the engine....is that correct?
And / or, if it is the mechanical pump used to bring fuel to the engine, where is that pump and if it is the mechanical one at the front in the middle of the V, what are the "fuel pump" fuses and relays for ?

the pump in the tank is a lift pump, low pressure, to get fuel up to the engine, the one on the engine, high pressure, will generate the pressure to feed the injectors.
with no codes and the fact you say the tank pump does whirr now and then it looks like the high pressure pump. you really need a dedicated VAG scanner to get live data.

Thank you Stewart, I'll get hold of a VAG scanner and see what that tells me! in the mean time I noted that there is very little fuel in the fuel filter so I had in mind to pop the R pin out, lift the connector and see if, with the ignition on, fuel would be pumped by the "in tank" lift pump..... maybe in changing out the pump too much air has got into the system.... how else could I bleed it?

The fuel pressure control valve which is located on the r/hand side of the fuel rail & the fuel pressure regulator are inter connected. If the fuel pressure regulator is not being energized by the ecu then the fuel goes back to fuel tank hense no pressure at all. your engine code or reg no would help

Right, I have borrowed a snap-on "Solus pro" that has given me some codes that remain after clearing and trying to start. 05658 through to 05662,"glow plug open circuit P161E upper limit reached (etc)." That's for all 6 but after clearing the codes again No 6 is ok and on starting it appears to "catch" but doesn't start.
Car used to start first pull, even in this cold weather, but the glow plug error might obviously be an issue for starting now, but why have all 6 failed at the same time??????
I tested the components, the fuel pump in the tank works but as yet I have not worked out how to run it continuously as part of a "test" cycle... Question: How can I simply test that there is fuel at the HP pump? (lossen off the top of an injector?)
Other codes include 05489 related to cruise control and 05716 DTC Memory instrument cluster and 05715 check DTC memory of ABS controller P1653.
Oh, and on the last start before the battery died I got an "ESP Fault" flash up on the display, might be associated to the flat battery ????

The low pressure pump (tank unit) has to work at pressure 6 bar. On a common rail system one of checks you must do to start with is a leak back if you have just 1 injector leaking back then your vehicle will not start simply because it takes the required pressure of the fuel rail. Check it out first & foremost

That makes perfect sense, how can I test each injector for a leak back to the tank???
