I have a 2004 1.9 tdi 130bhp estate. On the way home today the glow plug and traction control light lit up and I lost all power. I tried to read it with a little obd reader I keep in the car. It's only a basic one but it said that there were no codes. I turned it off and restarted but to no avail as the issue returned immediately. I have left the car in a layby to try and get it home later. Looking at it the brake light switch is a likely culprit. However I can still select gear when I press the brake pedal as it is an auto. I have also got one brake light gone. I changed this the other day and it worked momentarily but then stopped again. The bulbs look OK strangely. Anyway not much to go on but any pointers? Cheers

Don’t guess, get a proper code read BUT the brake light problem could be the issue.

I have managed to get the vcds on the car and 2 codes were present. I can't remember the exact numbers but one was a throttle pedal related issue and the other was the brake switch intermittent fault. I cleared them and the throttle code came back. This seems plausible, as when I restart the car no fault is present. Once you start to press the throttle the fault reoccurs. I did check the pedal in measuring blocks and all seemed good. I will see if the one on my allroad is the same or head up the scrap yard in the morning and see if that will solve it.

Check for any water ingress in the area of the throttle pedal.

Obviously any water getting in the pedal or connector there messes with the electrical outputs which will throw codes.

+1 for the water ingress I had same thing happen to me twice and it was water getting in the ecu and running down the pedal into the electrics. Re sealed the ecu and dried it all out under there.

Just to follow up. Yes it was the throttle pedal. There was no signs of water and looked on good order. Anyway fortunately the one on my allroad was exactly the same so I have borrowed that for the time being. All up and running again now.
