The garage reckons that you have to replace the housing and pipe at the same time. I'm not really bothered as i wasn't.
Had another issue with the brakes this time, the front passenger side calliper locked on and made the disc glow orange on a trip into work. At first i thought a tyre had blown from the noise, stopped and saw the disc red hot.
Took it to a garage opposite work and they replaced the front discs, pads and the calliper that had stuck on.
So after all that the first tank i only got 415 miles to empty. Just under 54 litres to fill.
After the thermostat being replaced it's still taking a while to warm up, sometimes if it doesn't get to 90 degrees the needle will drop as i drive along. Apparently looking at other threads this is normal with this engine. Seems to stay at 90 once it gets there though. But it does take a lot longer to heat up compared to my 09 plate A6 2 litre tdi.

Does it have the DSG gearbox.

If it does, over cooling problem will almost certainly be the DSG oil cooler thermostat that will need replacing.

Fairly cheap & much easier to replace than the engine thermostat.

Yes its a DSG gearbox, how will they know if this thermostat is faulty? Will it show up in the fault codes?

There is no fault code raised when this fails.

This is what it looks like :-
MAHLE TH 5 75 THERMOSTAT COOLANT | eBay

I don't know which engine you have, but access is usually by removing the air filter box & air pipe.

You should see 2 coolant pipes going to the DSG gearbox, one pipe has this mounted inline.
