The engine only has 30,000km and was serviced according to manual from the get go. The diesel engine type rattling noise only happened at 90°C in "D" when getting going under slight acceleration but got progressively worse until it was noticeable even when in "P" and revved between 1000 - 1500 rpms and when driving and hitting the gas a little at 2000-2500rpms .

An experienced VW - AUDI mechanic deduced that, although it wasn't leaking oil, a possible cause may have been the Camshaft Bridge/Bracket (images below), since the part seems to have been modified since the inception of the Gen 3 motors, apparently by expanding the oil port (06L 103 144 F - 06L 103 144 H)… his thinking was that the original part’s oil port size may have been starving the camshafts of oil at low rpms, causing the rattling sound.

Although there is significant improvement after the new Cam Bridge/Bracket was installed, the rattling sound still occurs at 90°C in "D" when getting going under slight acceleration at 1000-1500 rpms, as it did when the rattling sound first presented itself (Listen to rattle here: 1.8L TFSI CJEB Rattle Sound.m4a - Google Drive) ...so it can very well progress once again to happening even in "P" at 1000-2000rpms or when driving and hitting the gas a little at 2000-2500rpms😌.

Any ideas on what is causing this diesel type rattling sound?

The EA888 engine does have a Diesel like sound to it as is direct injection and in parts of the cycle is running in a Vern lean stratified charge mode that is noisy BUT these engines suffer terrible cam and lift problems, if we pull them apart we do all the lifters, chain set etc.

I appreciate your input, however I am the original owner of the car and the car only has 30,000km. Are you saying that most of the TFSI Gen 3 engines usually develop this type of rattling sound at such low mileage? I’m not referred to a “tac-tac-tac” sound of noisy lifters that does occur with these engines with mileage, (please listen to the audio in the post)…and again, the sound’s occurrence did alter somewhat with the change of the Cam Bridge but did not completely resolve and my worry is that it may worsen again as before.
