Hi i bought a golf mk5tdigt around a year ago! it was poorly but fancied a project....have replaced turbo core cleaned vains etc overboost now sorted! then throttle valve and egr as egr was shot and throttle valve had a broken gear internally.. all good i thought ......then the bugger decided to try and kill itself when the cam sensor bolt failed and sent the sensor and bolt rattling around and tore the cam belt !luckily the belt just clung on and timing wasnt upset.. So i then changed belt kit pulleys water pump and installed new cam sensor from gsf. That i thought would be it , fixed, finished surely nothing else can go wrong!!!! i used locking tools for cambelt change etc .. glowplugs also changed as 1 was us.. car runs good with good fuel economy etc but im getting random cam shaft sensor faults at high revs .. now ive used this site for many of the issues in the past just as a non member and it has been a great source of imformation.. but im a little stumped buy this .. Thats my tail of woe, please any suggestions on this issue..

torsion values are set at o inlet and .4 lts on fuel .

    thanks in advance

    chomley

Did you make sure the cam sensor gapped plate was undamaged? Cheap aftermarket sensors can be trouble, which make did you fit?

firstly thanks for replying.. the replacement part was bought from german french swedish unsure of manufacturer! you mention the gaped plate , looks ok did give it a check as what was left of the bolt and sensor were found down under the crank pulley when i did belt change, the rollers and cam pulleys all displayed impact marks intermediate rollers replaced but cam teeth needed to be dressed to remove.. the belt was torn but not detached servived with about a third of its width.. regarding the gapped plate its intact but did notice when running with belt cover removed that the plate did seem to oscillate around 1 mm left to right a little do you think thats it?? i thanks again for replying..

That amount of runout is enough to upset the ECU

AH THAT MAKES SENSE.. i did wonder but discounted it because i have no way of reading the signal .. So i think ill buy the vcds package and at least when i attempt to straighten it up ill be able to see the signals. Im wondering if i turn it over by hand ill be able to present the flags to the sensor ill be able to see them make breaking if manipulate plate !..worst case i guess i could change the thing out but that would be belt off job again.. thanks for your advice its given me fresh hopes of finding the cause.. will update when ive got the thing plugged in. im guessing it cant be that fare out as it runs great until you push it high in the revs.

    thanks chomley.

Torsion values set at 0 can be misleading. 0 is an out of range default so if you give it a slight rev and the reading doesn’t move then you are probably out of range. A silly idea when the target is ideally 0 although I aim for -2 to +2
