    Hi,

Looking to replace the gearbox in my 2013/63 Mk7 GTD DSG. Getting jerkiness and at 140k miles not sure if it's the Mechatronics or clutch packs so want to swap the lot out. According to the service book the gearbox code is PPR. Have found a decent looking one online from a 2016/66 plate car but it has code QMN.

As most people just sell a gearbox for a '2013-2017' DSG GTD, I'm hoping it's not going to be a problem and just a later revision but do I need to be worried? Are there any options that could require a different gearbox code? Will the car reject it?

    Thanks!

    Ted

Yes yours is a PPR and the QMN does fall into the cars listings but a PDZ, PUJ or QSF are a better match obsessively being the same thing. The QMN could possibly be made to work, the only difference I can see is the Mechatronic software so it may be possible to flash it with the PPR software BUT I hate used gearbox's with a passion... the money they have lost me is perverse. I HAD to buy one to do my 6 speed conversion, I went to huge lengths to find the best and when I first drove it, on overrun it sounded like a coffee grinder, when I pulled it apart it was wrecked; I spent £2k on parts alone to put the internals right... well I did sneak a few upgrades in there as well, rude not to

So, the situation is I recently bought a 2013 GTD DSG with 135k miles on it. Felt 'ok' on test drive but thought the gearbox felt a bit sloppy. A friend has a 90k 2014 GTD DSG and it feels way smoother, mostly noticeable pulling away from a stop when mine feels snatchy and non progressive. Some noticeably clunky gear changes too especially when changing down a gear. Can feel slack somewhere in the drivetrain when going from power to engine braking, as if something's got a lot of play in it. I have a receipt for a new flywheel at just over 100k so would think that's not the issue. It may well be just the mechatronics that are at fault but to pay a fortune for a 'refurb' (whatever that really means) and then find out it's worn clutches etc would be horrendous!

I'm with you about the used gearboxes which is why I have four DSGs in my garden annoying the hell out of SWMBO!

Just looking for a solution that won't break the bank really and have found a 48k mile QMN which would be great as a 'drop straight in' if it would work. Going to the extra expense of flashing gearbox software sounds like another money pit exercise to me so not really sure where to go now.

Oh, and apparently it won't work anyway without some coding due to component protection...?

Actually it is a 2014 model but built 12-09-13. If we were doing it I would recommend having the clutch pack replaced by a VAG specialist who knows how to do them and has ODIS to properly set it up; DQ250 Mechatronic failure is not a common issue but we do a lot of DQ250 and 500 clutch packs, we have only done a handful of DQ250 Mechatronics, unlike DQ200’s that we have done lots of.

    Thanks Crasher!

So probably starting from the beginning would be a good idea... Bought the car, I have a wide experience of driving VAG cars with DQ250 boxes and am aware they have their little quirks. This car has 140k miles on it, I have a receipt from a reputable garage for a DMF replacement just after 100k miles with the correct LUK part number. Also have receipts for DSG oil changes at 40k, 80k and more recently only a couple of thousand miles ago. No error codes logged on the box and have done the VCDS DSG reset and adaptation drive.

First thing I notice is that putting it into reverse on a slight hill from a cold start the car will jerk and actually stall or get very close to it when drive is taken up (with no accelerator). When pulling away especially at anything other than a gentle pull away, there is an inital jerk followed by a dead feeling for a short period then another jerk as it actually pulls away - maybe anti stall kicking in? Once on the move the changes are reasonably smooth but not a smooth as I'm used to. I have noticed that if I hold it in say 4th gear 1500ish rpm and accelerate lightly then engine brake there is definitely some sloppiness somewhere, feels like slack in the drivetrain somewhere.

I have another 2014 GTD with 90k miles on it and that is silky smooth - smoother than any other DQ250 I've ever driven. Almost too smooth - but maybe that's the accelerator damping that seems to be on the Mk7?

I'd really like to nail it down to something before taking apart and replacing expensive bits. Where would you be looking first?

    Thanks!

We did the DMF on an A3 using an LUK flywheel and about 6 months later the clutch started juddering, when we took the box out (again!) we noticed the new LUK DMF was already throwing its insides out, I have just driven a customers CC to the body shop and back as he felt the clutch or DMF was juddering, all I can hear is a whining turbo. Actually now I have listed in the bay the DMF is chattering on start up and shut down.

Oh no - one of the reasons I bought it was the fairly new DMF!

I hear it's possible to check the DMF through the starter hole, i that correct?

I could imagine the drivetrain slack being a flywheel but the jerk and stall seems like a different issue?

Bit of googling suggest I should be taking a look at engine/gearbox mountings too.

    Thanks.
