Hi all, registered a few years ago apparently but recently bought an 05 A6 2Ltr S Line 140bhp, car is in good shape so it seems, have a park brake issue but something that I can solve in time, I have VCDS so will get it scanned.

My first issue I want to resolve is that the car only came with a normal key, this opens the doors manually ok and starts the car but I would really like a remote fob to open all doors etc.

I enquired about a new key coded and registered but they are looking 160 quid and for the price I paid for the car I didn't think it was worth it so came up with another idea.

Could I buy a cheap generic keyfob off the likes of EBay with the correct internals and key blank and then get the blank cut to match and do the procedure for adding it to the car as another fob, obviously it wouldn't start the car but would open the doors, my thinking then is I can use the normal key when in the car or even the new cut blank maybe as the chip on the normal key will be on the same keyring, if so does anyone now the part number as it's a minefield of different numbers, or a way to find which key part number I need, thanks in advance.

So bit of an update on this, PO found the original key, it opens the doors via the lock and fits in the ignition but it doesn't open remote and it wont start the car?

It makes a red flash on all the buttons so the battery is ok?

    Any ideas?

a single flash means it has said hello to the car - multiple flash with pattern means it didn't say hello - quick followed by slow or slow followed by quick means last action was lock or unlock something like that .
and a half wave of the wipers on unlock means its time to change the battery..

    what is yours doing exactly?

sounds like we should get something sorted, however i am not sure how to program single key without a master - what does google say?

sounds like the key is doing what it should and you need a scan to see what else is going on with the car?
what would be good is if you use the key out of range and see what it does - come back to the car and press once with a single flash - then go out of range again and see what it does.
I just checked the manual - out of range and a rapid flash means car is not locked - slow flash and the car is locked. so if you get 2 different response when out of range this would tell you the key is working and communicating instructions which the car has acknowledged so the fault must be further down the line in the car.
