Thanks to everyone for your help / advice, I have finally had the sub frame bushes replaced and the "knock" has now gone. Happy again.

I think mine is developing a knock - and its up for MOT this Friday - I only had a 3 month wait for the date- my MOT expires today!! I did put in for 1 in good time ( 4 months ahead here in NI probably more now) but the system said no - too soon call back later....
The PSNI have said as long as you have a date and the car is in good shape they will not take things further if your MOT is out. Tax is a different story.

If the top arms need replacing, the through bolt can be a nightmare. We did both sides on a late type 8K A4 last week and after spending 4 hours just on one side with heat, air hammer etc we had to take the hubs off with the arms and give them to an engineer to drill the 100mm long bolt out and yet on an early 4F A6 we did a few weeks previously both bolts came out with no fuss.
