Purchased a 2006 RS4 Cabriolet last year and went to change the brake discs front and rear with new ones from Reyland motors.

Took off the old Brembo discs on the front (reusing the hubs) and found this on the inside surface of the disc (note the light brown is just from rain today) - passenger side - any ideas what the issue is - note the pads also have a matching section eaten out of them - like an arch:

    Any info would be great,

    Thanks

It is called Ferrous Oxide or Rust, something endemic with raw uncoated cast iron especially when used in our climate in lockdown conditions and when made in Italy.

    Thanks Crasher,

Understand it is rust of some form but only thing is that it was on the inside of one disc and is "raised" all away around in the centre of the rim and is very very rough. the brake pads have a similar "groove" cut into them. had no rain for weeks until yesterday and rims were on the car and in general use. Car has been used daily since I bought it last September.

Want to make sure I don't have a problem with my callipers etc as would hate the new discs to go a similar way plus if the pads were not in proper contact with the disc it must have been "dangerous"??!.

That is the way Oxidisation always repeats itself, bare cast iron can only rust… it is a natural process that cannot be stopped where Oxygen is involved; it is just that Italian Iron seems more prone than others, history repeating itself.
