Hi. I have a misfire on cylinder 5 which I was hoping was just an injector. I have removed the injector and then noticed in the top of the engine a bit of loose metal. I have fished out with a magnet two pieces of a follower. It looks like both inlet followers have gone. What would cause this?

My next step is to take the rocker cover off and have a good look in there and see if I can find the rest of the broken bits.

Can the followers be fitted without taking the cam and cam carrier off.

I can’t imagine how you can do that without a full chain strip down, a £15 part causing that much grief! If it is one cylinder then I should not cause a misfire like on the older 2.5 when they used to spit their fingers out; you only found out when two inlet/exhaust on the sae cylinder came out so there is going to be more to this. How many miles?

    Hi Crasher.

its done about 120k. I’m hoping to take the rocker cover off today to have a good look in the top of the bank. I can see the top of the two inlet valves so I assume when its running they arent opening hence the misfire. Chances are the bore was been washed with diesel for a while now which may have caused premature wear. I may be scrapping this car.

I agree, it sounds very expensive to fix; with the electric cars coming, scrapping a perfectly good 15 or so year car old due to a huge bill is something the world is going to have to get used to.

I removed the rocker cover. I think the chain has jumped as 4 followers have been broken. I think the car will be broken.

    anyone want anything off it??
