Hi all, friend of mine just had the idler pulley bolt snap off inside the block on his 07 a3 2.0tdi. 200,000 miles.
The pulley smashed through the cambelt cover. He was travelling uphill at around 20mph and said he saw a cloud of smoke when it happened.
Now I haven't seen it but I reckon its probably finished, but is there an easy way to tell without too much investigation?
He said the cambelt is still on but obviously under no tension and can easily be pulled off.
    Any advice please.

Usually the tensioner stud but that is in the head. The direct overhead valve design tends to hit vet hard and instead of bending a valve as in a canted design, it bends the rod(s) and hammers the valve(s) into the rockers and makes a terrible mess which writes the engine off; the only way to tell is to drill out the offending broken bolt/stud, rebuild as cheap as possible and see what it sounds like.

    Nice one thank you.
So can the cambelt and the offending pulley be reused to test it once we get the old stud out?

    If the stud snaps

The tensioners pulley tends to look like this

The location makes drilling the stud out a sketch and it must be done extremely accurately so it is dead square. If the location gets damaged it can be Time Sert/Helicolied out or a dual thread stud used and even then another oversize used with the different stud used but the metal gets thin and compromised.
