Hi, Not exactly a newbie, been a member for a few years. I have a question if anyone out there could help please?

Is is possible to complete the system function test (esp*& abs on dash not flashing) with 00778*fault*code? If not is there anyway of cancelling the system function test on vcds?

    Many thanks.

What is the code definition, faulty, implausible, no basic setting etc?

Hi Crasher, many thanks for replying. Ideally need to post the full scan but not quite sure how to do this tbh. The '00778' code = steering angle sensor (G85) 014 defective. Also have '00466' fault code= çontrol module for steering column electronics (J527) 013 check DTC memory?

Initially just had the esp light on dash (00778 fault) but accidentally enabled system function test which illuminated the abs light aswell. Both lights are solid and no matter what I do can't get them to flash etc. to start system test. Is it because the 00778 fault needs to be rectified (G85 sensor replaced) 1st before it can start the test? Is there a way to disable the test on vcds? Hope you can help with this issue, Many thanks.

I did that once, never again as I did not have ODIS then and had to take it to another specialist who did. It is pretty clear that you will need to fit a new steering column slip ring, set it up and see if you can complete the test, with a faulty angle sensor you can’t. It get the current number as being 8R0 953 568 M and retailing at £267.55 if it is Valeo

Many thanks for that Crasher, am I correct in assuming that the J527 module, steering angle sensor G85 & slip ring are all integrated in one part? - Thanks.

I just wanted to give an update on the steering angle sensor fault code '007785' issue I was having on my A4 B8, hopefully this may help others who are having the same issue & also save them a lot of money. I find it very frustrating when sometimes no update/solution final outcome is posted on forums.

So to give you some background, I had front suspension work done recently & the ESP light came on immediately after. A scan on VCDS showed up as fault code '00778' steering angle sensor (G85) 014 defective. After doing some research I found a guy based in Scotland who repairs steering angle sensor faults on VW, Audi, Skoda and decided to send it off to him as this was by far the cheapest option (new part costs around £300). Removing the G85 module which is part of the clock spring unit was a straight forward job 30 mins (airbag & steering wheel have to be removed 1st). 24hrs after posting the part to the guy i received it back, refitted it, cleared all faults on VCDS before turning the steering wheel (very important) both ESP light & ABS lights were on as soon as I pressed the brake pedal the ESP light disappeared with only ABS light still illuminated indicating that the system function test was started. Took the car for a test drive (follow the ross-tech procedure for system function test drive). As soon as I had completed the required left/right turns the ABS light went off within a few minutes of the drive. It's been a week and no lights are illuminated or any fault codes are stored. So hopefully this will help others. Lastly it only cost me £40 plus postage to resolve this issue, if your steering column slip ring also known as a 'clock-spring' is broken this will NOT fix your issue and you will need a replacement. Many thanks!
