    Hi everyone,

    2006 A8 4.2 V8 sport (not FSI)

I've got misfiring (or possibly no firing) on cylinder 6. My code reader tells me I have codes 16690 (Cylinder 6 misfire), 17778 (Cylinder 6 ignition cicruit open), 16684 (random mulitple misfires) and (confusingly as it reports Cylinder 10 which I don't have) 17718. It's running like an absolute bag of spanners, as you'd expect although it does drive.

We tried replacing the coil pack - not sure if is was exactly the right one but it made no difference. We also did a compression test on 6 and it didn't get into the green (was at about '4' whatever that means).

The car was absolutely fine before - its battery almost ran flat, so I jumped it and it was fine. Gave it a decent run to put some charge into the battery and it was fine - stopped off at the shops and when I started the engine - bag of spanners. Battery has recharged up to about 75% if that's relevant.

So, with terrors of head-off jobs investigating dropped valves and rings looming (which in reality I can't afford), might any heroes else have another explanation?

    Thanks in advance,

    Rob

    Oh. Not good….
Have you tried changing all the spark plugs, reseated all the coil packs. Even swapped them around to see if the issue moves.

These A8s (and Audis in general) are extremely fussy and sensitive when it comes to battery power. Any drop can get all sorts of stuff flashing up on the dash.

    Good luck

Thanks mate. I got a better code reader on it today and it's reporting P1347 - synchronisation of camshaft and crankshaft. Maybe the belt jumped a tooth or two - but now really worried that it's caused engine damage, especially with that low compression.

Right now not seeing much option but to see about getting the timing sorted in the vain hope nothing kissed in the engine.

Apparently only about 10K ago. I’m wondering if the chain tensioner between the cams in bank 2 has failed. I understand they do? That would mean the exhaust cam was turning but not the inlet cam right? Could explain lack of compression.

Getting the cam cover off is fiddly (due to poor access) but once in, you will be able to see.
Makes you winder if the cambelt change affected anything - if it wasn’t done completely correctly.

I read somewhere that it’s starting and revving that places the real strain on the camshaft chain adjustment unit. I have to admit I did give it a big Rev immediately before the running went to crap. What I’m not clear on is whether failure of that unit would give a cam crank alignment error code (as I thought the cam sensor was on the exhaust cam connected directly to the belt) and whether it could have caused valve damage. Any idea?

Revving the engine shouldn’t cause issues.
when you start it from cold, can you hear any extra noises on top of the normal cold tappets and injectors?
