2 lights on dash engine light and epc turns on after about 30 seconds of driving, also stop/start error

Diagnostics comes up with air leak ( 3 garages couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it) went for a gas check no air leak

Sent it to VW Huddersfield, they replaced the turbo actuator, all worked fine for about 2 months.

They’ve had another look and they say it’s actually the turbo, the arm has seized up, they want £1600 to fit a new turbo. Not happening.
They have my car in bits now and it only went in for a diagnostic??

I’ve spoken to a Vag specialist he said he maybe able to free the arm up or get the turbo reconditioned by a company.

He also said that he wouldn’t fit a used part.

He highly recommended I don’t do that ( completely understand his reasoning)

Has anyone else the same problems with this engine?
Any idea of Costs or the best way to go about this problem?

    Thanks for reading.

I totally agree with him about used parts, If I could suddenly claim back all the money used parts have wasted me in both time and new parts, I could retire today. Before we can help you we need the results of a VCDS scan on the engine ECU. Seized waste gate on these engines is becoming an epidemic I think from condensation in the exhaust from short journeys or no use at all during lockdown, Midland Turbo do an excellent job of rebuilding them with modifications to prevent future corrosion.

Thanks for your reply, how do I get a vcds scan?
I will check midland turbo out, thanks.

How do I prevent the condensation in the exhaust on short journeys, would it pay to leave the engine running for a short time?

I don’t think you can stop it but certainly a long journey puts enough heat into the system to dry it out after use. Burning fuel using atmospheric air will always produce water vapour (by far the worst and most common Greenhouse gas) so better materials are required which is what Midland do, they have rebuilt huge numbers of the tiny 1.0>1.5 turbo’s. Any VAG specialist should have VCDS or at least the dealer system ODIS (which is awful) and be able to give you a printed report, if not find one that will. I really don’t like the “leave me the keys and pay the bill” attitude, you need to communicate and let a customers go ont tinterweb with proper info if they want to, often just for conformation and peace of mind.

Thanks, I’ll speak with my garage on Monday and see if they can do a report.
But judging from what you’ve said I already know what needs doing, the turbo needs repairing with the better parts otherwise it will just happen again!
My next worry is my bill from VW who have taken my vehicle apart without my knowledge when it only went in for a diagnostic

A rebuilt unit typically costs about £900 all done including an oil change to help the rebuilt unit; a rebuilt turbo from VW is £1128.37… just for the part.

What would you think his chances are of freeing up the arm?

    Little update

I picked the car up today and VW didn’t charge me a penny, car valeted and washed, gave me the key showed me to the car.
Got in the car pulled out the forecourt and the turbo kicked in like a dream, I think the mechanic must have freed up the arm on rebuilding the parts they had taken apart in the diagnostics….. and to think they tried charging me £1600 and it’s now in full working order!!
