So I just replaced the turbo on my BKD due to going in limp mode (overboost) and generally not performing well. It is now performing better and no more limp mode but something still doesn’t feel quite right, before having any issues I remember the car pulling quite smooth and quiet when on boost but it just seems to make a lot of engine noise these days and feels like it doesn’t pull as well as it used to. The car is now on 116K so I guess I couldn’t rule out other issues.

Any ideas what I could be looking at or is there anything worth checking with vcds?

    Thanks guys

Have you got any fault codes?

If not perhaps do a compression test to see what the condition of the engine is like?

No fault codes, what sort of compression should these engines have? Guess it’s worth a check I think I’ve got a tester that should fit it.

Couldn’t comment on values but it’s more about whether they are all consistent or within a certain tolerance.....

I had an issue where one of my cylinders was down on compression causing a misfire on cylinder 2 (it was down by about 40psi compared to the rest) had a rough idle as a result.

    Results of this are below:

    Cylinder 1 135psi
    Cylinder 2 100psi
    Cylinder 3 145psi
    Cylinder 4 140psi

Do the compression test and post results.

If not compression and no fault codes could be a mechanical issue.....just have to get back to basics, ie air, spark and fuel....

Think BKD is a Diesel engine so might be a slightly different approach to a spark ignition engine.

Diesels are designed as compression ignition engines and therefore cylinder pressure is vital for correct operation.

You will need a very narrow and long M10x1 adapter to replace the glow plug. Once removed, DO NOT re-use these glow plugs, they have a habit of snapping.

Thanks that’s a good point, I will get some new glow plugs. Just checked and I have a long M10x1 adapter so hopefully that will do the job.

Hi guys, I took the car out tonight and noticed it’s making kinda a howling noise and low revs from the turbo, would this be an exhaust leak or boost leak maybe ? Definitely didn’t do this before but I’m struggling to find any leaks, although it is quite difficult to see anything down the back of the engine.

A howling BKD is always the turbo. I had one in from another garage which was at it’s wits end with one in a Seat Leon, it had the classic hoot and howl, rather like a police siren, well not a French one… I took the turbo to Midland Turbo and they couldn’t stop laughing at what a mess had been made of it.

I think it’s a boost leak I’ve got oil spurted allover the sump thinking it’s the hard plastic pipe by the looks of it, just about to try and block the pipe on the bench and test it with some compressed air. It doesn’t howl all the time it’s just when you let off the revs
