    Hi All,

My Golf Mk4 V6 2.6 24valve decide to blow the head gasket!!

All stripped back ready to remove the camshafts.

Cylinder number 1 at TDC and the flat camshaft locking tool in place.

Do I have to remove the VVT units (I think correct term) ?

I have remove the engine end plate and chain tensioner, just not sure about the VVT units?

I have put a 32mm spanner on the camshaft and tried to undo the 18mm bolt in the VVT but it does not seem to want to budge?

    Thanks in advance

You really should change the chains which is engine out. If it is an AQP or AUE, we do have a an extremely low mileage unit my business partner bought in 2004 as a spare for his 4M which we had sold brand new in 2000 and the owner traded up to an R32 so he bought it back. It has moved on now but we still look after it and the engine is still perfect at 200000 miles so it is just sitting under the bench as it has done for 17 years.

    Hi

I have bit the bullet and pulled the engine out. I believe it to be BDE engine code (as the engine number is BDE007212) Its covered 120,000 miles

I will order chain kit tomorrow.

I have pulled the head off due to the engine burning coolant

I am trying to find torque settings (procedure for the various bolts etc) Head bolts, Camshaft journal nuts, Camshaft sprocket bolts, Timing chain cover bolts, Inlet manifold bolts, exhaust manifold nuts and I am sure loads more that I have missed.

    Thanks in advance

Sign up to https://erwin.volkswagen.de/erwin/sh...7C088.ASTPVWE1 get some space ready on a hard drive, download a print to pdf program and pay 7 Euro, in the hour allotted (make sure no unwanted distraction is going to annoy you) and in that time you can download the entire VW workshop manual for your car, maybe another hours subscription once you get used to it but in that case (with the possibility of interruptions) 25 Euro (20 quid) gives you a full 24 hours without the stress of a ticking clock. In this system you will find extremely detailed information on every aspect of the car at dealer level and full access to technical product information. For what you are doing you must set yourself up will full VCDS.

WOW as always a full and concise reply.

I will wait for the family to go home!! then investigate Erwin and make sure I have space ready on the Hard drive.

Why will I need Full VCDS?

Just wondering if you have seen my other post, regarding what appear to be a vacuum pipe dangling down in to space?

    Thanks

    Hi,
Hope it is all progressing OK?
As you have probably already found, there are many good YouTubes from people like Humble Mechanic etc for the VR6 and similars that lead you through the job.
Erwin (either paying for access or getting a "copy" of elsawin from fleaBay) has all the VW tech info you will ever need (including wiring diagrams for tracing those annoying electrical problems that will occur).
You will almost certainly need VCDS and interface for calibrating, resetting/adapting etc once it is all back together... as an owner of several VAG cars, I can attest to it being indispensable: it reaches the parts that other code-readers don't, and very quickly pays for itself. Or find someone in your local area that can pop round to assist?
It IS possible to do the chains with the engine still in the car, but I can tell you that it's a whole pile more fiddly than with the engine out....!

The VVT units don’t need electronically calibrating but the throttle body does, without your own VCDS cable you are really going to struggle.

Well, its the 30th, how did it go!?

VANOS, I think that is a term only used by BMW, but we are talking the same thing here, variable valve timing. AFAIK, VCDS is not needed for this, driven by oil pressure, assuming the new chains have been installed correctly.... hope you have done the 720 degree two turns of the engine test to make sure the marks all line up again, before putting the timing covers back on, bolting the gearbox back on, putting the engine back in....not finding the clutch still sitting on the bench under a piece of cardboard.....
As crasher has already said earlier today, you really will need VCDS to recalibrate the throttle body (I presume that has also been taken off and cleaned carefully!?) (Engine, Group 60; procedure given on the RossTech website). You will no doubt need it for other things too (like EGR etc) if you stick with VAG cars...
    cheers
