Odd ‘motor’ sound when ignition off

Hi - I’m after any advice on a sound my Passat makes. I’d describe the sound like a stepper motor but more or less constantly running, with a brief pause before starting again.

The noise comes from the drivers side wheel arch area, but I’d guess from within engine bay. Loud enough to hear from inside the cabin.

It does not sound if the car has been sitting locked. However, once unlocked, the noise starts and doesn’t seem to stop all the while the car is unlocked. It’s not loud enough to hear if this continues once the engine is running.

It could be normal - but doesn’t sound as though it should be...

Mine does exactly the same. Hadn't really thought about it. Nothings gone wrong and like you say once engine is turned on you don't notice it.

Thanks - could be normal… I’ve had the car for 4 years, yet only noticed it during the past few months. As you say - nothing appears wrong so maybe nothing to worry about.

That is often the warning sound for impending EGR unit failure, extremely common on the CAYC engine.
