Driving home a few weeks ago the heater blower suddenly stopped. I took it out and gently tapped the fins and it started again, tried to some silicon wd40 down the shaft, put it back in. It ran fine for a couple of days and then stopped, two weeks later just started mid driving, but wouldn't start when I next started the car. When it was working, the fan speed control all worked fine.

Question is, is this a failing motor, a stuck motor that needs lubrication, or a resistor problem.

I tend to think if the blower motor were to fail, it would just fail, this seems more like it's getting stuck, or seizing up a little. I have recently bought a power probe to bench test it to see if it spins every time off car but have not had time yet.

    Thanks.

If the blower motor has plain bearings they may be seizing up. These are made of self lubricating sintered bronze, which is porous enough to hold oil for "life", but the contact surface eventually becomes glazed, forming an impervious layer, and oil no longer reaches the friction surface. Providing lubrication frees them temporarily, but the only remedy is to replace them - if possible, or to replace the motor, preferably with one with ball bearings.
If the motor has ball bearings these may be dry or badly worn, but can usually be replaced. In this case, as these small motors often have plain shafts without machined bearing locations, their positions on the shaft should be measured and noted before disturbing them.
