Thinking of purchasing 2.0TDI 140bhp or 170bhp. To my knowledge the main problem with engine is balance shaft and weak chain tensioner despite not often discussed (perhaps not that common). It's putting me off a little as it sounds more and more like n47 engine the more research I do, also do people sort balance shaft as soon as they buy the car or most of you pray and pay ?

The oil pump/balancer drive went to gears in 2006 and these were initially worse than the chain, later ones are fine so its very age specific. As for it not being discused that much well maybe not now but in the past it seemed to be every other post.

Hi I have just purchased a Passat 57plate 170PD with a BMR engine code that has been maintained impeccably by its previous owner (service at least every 10k and replacement parts etc) however I am concerned about the oil pump having read online.

    My Chassis number is:
    WWWZZZ3CZ8EO18284

It has 100k miles on the clock and I was hoping for a workhorse up to 200k.

Is this a gear or Chain driven oil pump?

Would you buy a KMB kit, just change the hex key or just drive it until it fails?

Any advice greatly appreciated………. My mk5 golf 1.9tdi did 250k no issues and only serviceable items…..maybe they don’t make them like the olden days 😂

    Gear driven .

    Kit 9

Oil Pumps from KMB Parts Direct specialist Oil pump replacement parts, Audi 2.0tdi, VW 2.0tdi, engines, support, help, advice, Sheffield, UK, England.

They designed it to fail , it's the only explanation of what they did with making the 6 x 77mm hexagonal key a lose fit by not making the #2 balancer shaft keyway not hexagonal and not deep enough so it only goes in by 15mm .

Both wear and only 0.5mm has to come of the keys 6 edges and it loses oil pump drive so a new key is not an answer as keyway is already has wear .
