Thread: 55 plate touran ignition or steering lock problems?

    I have removed the barrel,(left the key in) by inserting bit of wire down hole. On close inspection there is a lot of wear on the white plastic tab coming out of end, and the key sometimes catches when rotating. So can I just replace the barrel or do I still have to replace whole thing? It all works fine when inserting screwdriver into slot!( not that I am going to drive like that&#129315

    I am struggling to upload a picture...there is a white plastic tab comes out the back of the barrel, spring loaded. Spring feels very weak, thin and chipped. Something to do with steering lock?!

    1) Take a picture and save it on your computer in a suitable location.

    2) When you post a message, in the "Your Message" window, in the second row, there is a small greenish square in the third group. Click on this, choose the "From Computer" tab and Browse your files to find and select the image.

    Alternatively, you can upload the image to a hosting site such as postimage and paste it into the box in the "From URL" tab.

    My barrel is now back in the car, so I can't look at the back of it at the moment, and it doesn't want to come out.

    Maybe you can compare yours with images of new ones on line.

    Or compare it with a new one if possible.

    Or take it to a car locksmith or VW tech and show it to him.

    Okydoke...that doesn't work on my phone! I have contacted an auto locksmith, so will update as I go along. Thanks again for the input!

    That is what i am hoping. Would you agree that if everything is working as it should behind the barrel, that would pretty much indicate that it is the barrel that is at fault?!

    I think it will work but if not it is no big deal to take the barrel out again and replace the lock.

    That seems a reasonable assumption.
    I just managed to take out my barrel again - I have to put only the blade of the key in the lock, to allow the wire to go into the hole straight.
    The spring loaded plastic tab on the back of my barrel is not damaged.
    As far as I can tell, it drops into a slot in the main mechanism, making a click, when the key is turned to the OFF position.
    I don't think this is to do with the steering lock, which makes a slightly louder click when I remove the key.
    I think the plastic tab may be what stops the key turning when my gear selector lever is not in PARK.
    I get both these clicks both with and without the switch fitted.

    I have now fitted the correct switch, which just arrived, and the key turns smoothly to all positions. I will seal the grub screws with nail varnish, which sets pretty fast.

    After replacing all the parts I had to remove I intend testing every function of the mechanism, electrical and mechanical, before I go on the road.

    Considering its low price compared with that of the lock barrel, it might be worth changing the switch also.

    Mine failed at just over 40,000 miles (and 25 years )
