That is very true. When putting the new barrel in, I take it I have to insert key and bit of wire again to get it to locate? No issues with recoding? Cheers

I managed to jiggle wire in with the plastic bit of the key bent over...a bit awkward. I may remove for replacing. Maybe the metal bit that is on a spring at the back, that the wire locates into is related to the steering lock?! Hope it all works perfectly...keep us posted!

I find the wire releases the lock cylinder more readily if the key blade is removed from the plastic, so that the wire goes into the hole straight. It also works better if the end of he wire is rounded and not square and sharp.

The spring loaded metal part which is moved back into the body when the wire is inserted is the retaining tang which holds the lock cylinder in place.

According to my Haynes manual, the lock cylinder should be replaced with the key in and turned to the ON position, and slid into position until the retaining tang can be heard to engage with a click. The key should then be pulled lightly to check that the cylinder is securely held in position.

Is that with the wire in, holding the spring loaded bit of metal down?!

No. I said, above "The spring loaded metal part which is moved back into the body when the wire is inserted is the retaining tang which holds the lock cylinder in place"

If the tang (which is what you seem to be calling the spring loaded bit of metal) is held down it won't click into place.

Incidentally, I took the car for a short drive today with no adverse results from replacing the switch.

Great stuff! Isn't it good when it comes together! I talked to auto locksmith and am now not sure it's the barrel. It takes me a while to get my head round things but slowly getting there.. have ordered a Haynes manual, and going to slowly dismantle the lot. I might try removing switch first like you have to see if the barrel works with that out before the full thing!

Actually, I'm more used to engines LIKE THIS

Although mine weren't so dirty, and my motormen were not superannuated

There were a lot of electronics, but not tucked away in obscure places.
