I've got a 3.0 TDI 2016 Q7 and I've just noticed there is a brief metallic rattle on start-up that sounds to me like the timing chain before oil gets to it. Used to have a leggy Saab 900 Turbo with the same noise

Is this a common issue on this engine? It's done 68k, I wouldn't expect this to be a problem at this age/mileage for this generation of 3.0 V6 TDI?

    Any advice will be appreciated.

68k seems to few, however your description reminds me the timing chain. If the chain elongated, then you will hear this noise for a few seconds, but more and more longer each time you start your engine. It's not occures because of the oil miss, but because the chain tensioner could fix this issue after some seconds, like when the chain will rotate at the appropriate speed, then this rattle noise will disappear - but unfortunately not for forever.

IMHO you should check&fix this, because if the chain will break up, then it could do serious damage in the engine.

Thanks for the replies. Does this fault sound typical at 67k? I'll get it booked in for diagnostics.

We have one in at the moment where I have been dealing with a suspension compressor problem and the chap seems not too interested in picking it up, so every morning I have to take it out and when I start it I think my face has less blood in it than the tensioner has oil… I want it to leave before it goes, if you know what I mean… Any repairs to this system, even preventatively, will render the vehicle scrap.

Just to confirm will render it scrap because the car is so old and of little value...? Repairs to a 66 plate wouldn't render it scrap would it

When the chains fail the valves on both sides hit USUALLY but you don't know until new chains are fitted and if it has hit you have to take it apart and again rebuild the engine so the usual course is to assume it has hit and fit a new engine. PM me the reg number.

The problem with the warranty you mentioned in your PM is proving there is a problem developing, you will have to leave it with them to see if they agree there is a worry; do you imagine they will agree? The CRTC engine is so involved to rebuild even Audi do not offer an exchange rebuilt unit, only new at £15244.20… this is the road manufacturers are taking us down to get us ready for when an electric Q7 needs a new battery at £26206.56 plus fitting, and that is not an arbitrary figure, that is the listed price of an etron battery… the world has gone mad but we are set on this path and the nightmares it will bring though no sane non shouty head will be able to stop it, we will have to learn the hard way.

Can I ask you about my case.
I bought Audi A7 last August and now I can hear rattling noise. Its started 4 months ago and becoming worse.
When I bought it from Car Shop I purchased an extra warranty from third party ASSURANT company. It is for 1 year ( warranty is still valid)
The car is one year after manufacturer warranty.
Third party saying it is wear and tear part and they do not want to cover it.
    Can you suggest something ?

Next time don't buy a warranty that covers only mechanical breakdown, the entire aftermarket warranty company is a scam and needs regulation.
