    Hi all
I'm absolutely rubbish with cars so excuse any stupidity you may you read, I'm just after abit of help before I go through the next year stressing to save up £600+ for a cambelt change

I have a 2017 vw polo blue GT, just had its major service yesterday and couldn't help notice on the paper work telling me next cambelt change is May 2022. Panic alarm.

I've been googling around and although finding no definite answers, a few things have alerted me..

    1. Is my car an actual cam belt or chain?
I believe something was changed in this car in regards that area, ACT? Or something, so assuming it's a chain then that doesn't need changing anyway?

    2. Cambelt for life?
I've read a couple of times cambelt in newer cars are written out as set for life by vw themselves? Despite it still showing as change every 5 years in the manual, vw are saying it should last the life time of the car? So I'm assuming if it's belt it also doesn't need changing?

I don't drive much at all, 2017 plate and still on 18k miles. I'm not made of money so you can probably understand why I'd rather not pay for a cam belt change if I don't actually need too and with all the above I'm just not sure what is required, ultimately I just wana know the truth as I am trying to look after the car too but don't want to pay unnecessary costs.
Please help and diffuse my confusion and sorry for the lengthy post but appreciate if you've read this far

    Thank you

That is the CZEA engine and the car was built 23-03-17 and it has a cam belt, the VAG UK theory is every five years so roughly April 2021 but VAG Germany don’t say the same.

What does vag Germany say then? As I barely drive it, only at 18k miles, surely at this rate I can go another few years? I don't really know how it works though but I do understand if you don't change it and it goes on you, then it is catastrophic damage

The system has hardly altered in 20 years… a few years ago we did a 2003 Octavia with 18k and the original belt, which was still perfect. I try and argue against the VAG recommendation but I have to be cautious as if one failed due to my advice, it would not look good. I do my own Octavia VRS and Mrs Crashers Polo GTI (same 1.8T engine) every six years. When I did it two years ago it had done 30k miles and was perfect as was the water pump. A year later the genuine VAG exchange water pump started leaking and there was no way I was letting a Skoda dealer anywhere near my car for warranty. The water pumps are now new outright, not recon.
