    Hello fellow B7 owners,

Day two of owning 2.0TDi CFFB Estate and I noticed an added noise from the engine. Hard to describe the noise (pumping / grinding?), but noticeable in neutral-2nd gear, less on 3rd gear (it could just be due to slow speed) and can't tell with 4-6th gears as other ambient noise mask the added noise.

Turning ON the A/C significantly reduces the noise (but not completely). It sounds identical to these videos on YouTube:

The comments made on the videos seem to indicate A/C compressor bearing and replacing the compressor seems to resolve. I understand the compressor is mega bucks. I could go back to the dealer who said "it comes with 3 month warranty" (but no paper to back up, other than the generic blurb on their AutoTrader page) to sort out, but I'd like to know what exactly is causing the noise.

Unfortunately I don't have VCDS or OBDeleven (I used to have VCDS-Lite but long gone; I'm about to order OBDeleven this time), but will there be some fault code associated with this added noise to be more precise with diagnosis?

    Happy motoring!

It is likely to be a the alternator one way clutch, the load from the compressor calms the movement but compressors do fail but are not daft money aftermarket; avoid the Chinese ones though (even Hella branded) I have had to change two of these under warranty now which is bloody annoying.

    Thanks very much Crasher,

Got OBDeleven (Next Generation, PRO access) earlier this week and did a scan; a couple of old fault codes which cleared and have not come back. I'm new to OBDeleven (I used to have VCDS-Lite) so I don't know where the module for testing alternator or a/c compressure (if there is a disgnostic test available) so not so sure how to pin point the exact component that's causing the added noise.

Engine noise masks everything when inspecting under the bonnet so that's another challenge.

I can’t see a scan helping you in this case.

    Thanks Crasher,

I guess the sure way is to loosen the fan belt and physically feel the pulleys on the a/c compressor and the alternator like this (video is for alternator pulley)?:

With the belt off, hold the alternator armature with a non conductive tool and make sure the pulley slips anti-clockwise

Thanks very much Crasher. This is on my do to list now.

But I might take it to the independent dealer I bought it from to sort out. They said every car womes with 3 months warranty (mentioned verbally, no paper work or terms & conditions provided) so I might just leave them to sort it. I also have parking sensor issue so get it all sorted. Downside is the dealer is 50min away and it might not be a good time to go one car down at the moment.

    Happy motoring!
