Having connected Android via blue tooth and downloaded the contacts the navigation system does nor recognise the addresses. Entering post codes does work though but what point in having contacts in system? Also able to add favourites to destinations but can't edit list and remove them!! Fortunately have Waze available to use as car system definitely second rate.

To be honest it feels like the built in nav is there for people who don't have a modern phone. Minimum effort for just a placeholder.

Not much about it is as remotely functional as the one from the previous mk7 family....

I too suspect that a lot of VW folk thought that everybody would just use Android Auto.
Probably in a pit underneath a steam loco somewhere.

At least the over the air updates are a step forward. Updating via SD Card (when they'd got around to even making the update) was a right pain on the Mk 7.5.

In theory you could upgrade the maps on the mk7.5 over an Internet connection (WiFi) but it never worked.

Wasn't that only if you have had the Pro (or whatever the top tier was called) head unit feature set?

On my Audi A6 which is essentially the same system at the back end, the issue with OTA updates is that they only update the area you are in at the time. The UK is split into 5 or 6 areas so I for instance only get the SE area update as that is where I am most of the time. If I travel outside the area and am there for enough time for the update server to realise I am there I will then get the upate for that area.

And just for clarity, when we’re talking about ota map updates, am I right in thinking these seem to happen in the background? That is, without getting the notification that an update is available and needs to be accepted? I have noticed updates to the map database have occurred without me having to accept an update.

Yes they seem to happen with no notification. Which is fine by me.
