    The instructions on the VW site talk about needing a data plug.

    Does anybody know if this is correct or do you just need do download the App?
    Probably in a pit underneath a steam loco somewhere.

    My car came with a data plug, never used it and the app works fine. I assume the data plug functionality was "built in" to the Golf 8 but I could be wrong. Either way, the We Connect app works fine without the data plug on my experience.

    The data plug is not required for the Golf 8, in fact I think there is another post on this forum where someone, like you, was given and assumetold by the dealer it was needed and got into all sorts of problems (given how flakey the service is anyway not what is needed!). Best to just chuck in a drwaer and forget about or give it back to the dealer next time you are passing

    I took the info from the VW UK web site. Was not given a data plug and no mention in the handbook.

    The problem is so many of the car settings seem to require that you have the app to make them stick.
    If you don't you are on a sort of guest profile that resets a lot of stuff to default every time you turn off the engine.
    At least, according to the handbook, it seems you need the app to set yourself up as principal user. You'd think it would be coded to the key. I admit I've not tried to set this up yet without the app.

    You do need the we connect app to get the most out of it and you will need the key as part of the registration process which is best done on Volkswagen uk website.

    Registration also allows you to set yourself up as the driver of the car but different drivers can be registered and use the same or different keys

    The dealer should have taken you through all this at the handover, even if it was contactless

    You need a dataplug for the We Connect Go app which is different to the We Connect app.
