I learned a LOT today. I've had the problem explained and shown to me by Audi. They attempted to replace the control arm on the actuator/turbo. And yes, it is available as a separate part - cost is £28. They were able to free the existing arm from the actuator end (held by circlip) but failed to removed it from the turbo end. So basically, the arm is "seized " on the lever at the turbo end. They'd previously told me that the turbo was seized and wanted to replace at a cost of nearly £2000. They don't want to try too hard to free it, obviously, because they want to charge for a new turbo. The technician demonstrated to me that the wastegate itself is free. So the turbo is OK (probably) and the actuator is OK (probably). I'm getting the new arm and they're putting the car back to how it was. I'll ask my friendly local garage to try and un-seize the arm and connect the new one. We'll see.

It's been a while so I thought I should just give an update for completeness. As I mentioned before, the control rod was seized at the turbo side and Audi weren't willing to try and free it. They gave the car back to me as was, although they didn't actually replace the circlips, together with the replacement control rod. So at Audi, I basically spent £88 - £60 for diagnostics and £28 for the new control rod.

I took my car to a local garage and asked them to free the control rod, on the understanding that if they broke the turbo I'd bear the costs. They succeeded in freeing the control rod - it was tough but they managed it eventually. They installed the new control rod and circlips. Cost ..... £50.

So in total, including what I'd paid to the first garage I took the car to, I've paid less the £200. Audi wanted close to £2,000. Even the first local garage were planning on removing the whole turbo and sending it away.

Car is now fine. No more error codes or warning lights. Lessons well and truly learned.

It is what we do when they are seized, we want a repair that is guaranteed.
