    Hi
    I have a 2004 A3 bgu 1.6 8valve
Problem is it runs great then when its warmed it starts smoking when stuck in traffic and misfires. usually it clears when you get up to speed but not always.
The plugs are oiling up for some reason and i think thats causing the misfire . I was told it was the head gasket or valve stem oil seals so i had them done but its still the same.
Its not losing any water and the compression is good on all cylinders. also had a leak down test done and that was fine engine seems strong.
Its had a new egr valve fitted also. I was told it could be the pcv valve but not sure how you remove that as it seems to be molded into the rocker cover.
Im sure some of you guys on here will know what the problem is,
I dont want to get rid of my audi as i really like it and also i just hate being beaten lol
I do have an error code regarding the oxygen sensor 19617 - Linear Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1; Pump Current Wire: Open Circuit
could this cause it or not?
    thanks in advance
    Dave

That fault code would not cause your problem, the opportunity to deal with this was missed when the head was off which a little remiss of the people that did it, these engines are very prone to bore glazing and oil ring failure; this will not cause a compression problem. With the head off it is a relatively quick job to drop the sump, pop the pistons out, hone the bores and rebuild with new rings.

    Glazed bore (different engine)

The ideal finish is a matt look with 45 degree cross hatching and this is easy to achieve with readily available honing tools that fit in a drill. This is a professional plateau honed bore (with torque plate)

Thanks crasher for your expert info mate and the photos 👍
I'm gonna get the rings swapped ASAP. My relation changed the head gasket for me f.o.c so looks like he's gonna get a ribbing from me lol😀😀
    Thanks again
