It comes out from below but needs to be quite high up.

I guess then, domestic 'Halfords' type ramps won't be enough.

I don’t think you would have enough height to drop and remove but I hate ramps anyway… had a few nasty experiences with them.

Well, here's a spot of weirdness...
Whilst under the bonnet weighing up options, my local indie mechanic wandered past. After a discussion about the problem (more me trying to wangle some time on his post lift), he said he'd seen something similar before and in his experiences with VW, check the brake lights. Seriously? Errr... ok... All working.
Two days later, bulb fail light is on, o/s brake bulb black and blown. Changed the bulb and - so far - no more temp or fan issues!
How the **** does that work? Black magic? Voodoo? Ouija board? co-incidence?

I've given it a few names, Can Bus wasn't one of them.

The things that happen are daft, today we fitted a new CAN BUS to a Golf 7, we transferred the coding from the old one to the new part and this then decided all the other units were stolen and locked the car down in VIN linked Component Protection mode… the only way to get it back was to use ODIS in GEKO security level to rematch all the controllers on the car and reset the car to the VAG server in Germany. How many non VW dealers can do this? It is wrong that the EU has decided cars should be like this.
