    Hello Octavia owners,

It's been a long time since I've been in VWAF... I was very active few years back when I had '99 A4 Avant B5 1.9TDi AFN engine (what a fun car, I still miss it). Moved on to '98 VW T4 2.5TDi ACV, and now I'm looking at Octavia Estate for our next daily runner.

Life has also changed and we are looking for a family friendly car that ticks the following:

    • Spacious and safe for two kids (2yrs and another due in Otcober)
    • Daily runner for my wife
    • Towing capacity around 2000kg for single horse trailer
    • As cheap as possible vehicle duty!

Budget is around £7,000-8,000 so I think we can get as new as around 2013 (MK3, I'm assuming?).

I stumbled an 4x4 Octavia with the engine 1.6TDi CLHA engine...

    103BHP, 250Nm, 6 speed, combined 62.3mpg, and 119g/km Co2 so £30/year tax?! REALLY?!

Has diesel engine advanced so much since late 90s that it can have as much power, fuel efficiency, and low emission?!

For someone who's had 90s car all along, this sounds too good to be true. Or have I been left beind in the technological advancement?

    How good is CLHA engines?

The CHLA seems a lot less prone to DPF, EGR and injector problems than the previous CAYC BUT we have seen a few with oil pressure problems (confusingly nearly always on Skoda’s) and quite a lot of camshaft module failure where to coin a phase a friend of mine came up with “sounds like a skeleton ******* in a biscuit tin

Sounds like an excellent car. I had to check that the 1.6TDi engine had been offered with 4x4 but looking at a brochure from early 2014 there it is. One of the great things about the 4x4 is that you get independent rear suspension which is a vast improvement on the beam rear axle from the POV of handling and ride comfort. Apart from the 4x4 there is no other way of getting the IRS with such a lower-powered engine. The 1.6TDi engine is also pretty decent in terms of pulling power (nothing like the 2.0 but plenty good enough) and capable of great fuel consumption.

    Thanks both,

And nice to hear from you again Crasher.

After doing some more research, it seems that B7 Passat of similar age (2.0TDi Bluemotion, CFF/CFFB engine?) has better weight for our towing needs so we are moving on to Passat.

Having learned some basic tinkering on '98 1.9TDi AFN engine and been watching YouTube clips on the more modern 2.0TDi engines, things have changed so much! Naturally I was looking at where the turbo, intake and exhaust manifolds, and egr pipes are and they are all burried under plastic covers and all sorts. I'm not expecting easy DIY with more modern engines...

Moving on to Passat forum page...
