    Hey all,

I think I am having the worst nightmare with my VW Golf Mk6 GTD 2.0 (engine code: CBBB) - I drove about 3 streets down and the engine just died on my whilst doing approx 30 mph.
I had no warning lights on dashboard, no big bangs or booms; just complete loss of engine power and power steering. Tried to restart the car and all I heard was a 'whirring noise' (sound clip attached)

I did a VCDS scan and all results reported 'OK'. To which I am guessing that its not an electrical but mechanical fault.

Called out the recovery who sent someone in a VW Roadside assistance and he tried all sorts:
Tried to start the car and the 'whirring noise' has gone and its just 'ticking'
    Battery boost - no luck
    Starter motor - no luck
Roll start - cant see movement in crankshaft

His suspicions are that the engine has seized!

I am quite baffled by this; as the car was last serviced at 135000 miles and its currently on 139000 miles following the service book regime mentioned in the service book.

Can anyone recommend of potential next steps this could be? Or does this actually need to go into a garage and up a ramp?

I have had a look at potentially going down the reconditioned engine path but the local garage reviews arent the most comforting to hear......

    Thanks in advance!

I have had a number of these snap their cranks and usually it is on number 1, on all we the ones we have experienced they either had a single mass flywheel conversion or a badly failed dual mass flywheel. Upon close examination the cranks are cast iron, not the far superior forged steel VW used to use.

Ouch, messy! When my life was all air cooled, dropped valves on number 3 were a part of my day to day life, my 1302 LS did it once but being a semi automatic the engine didn't get dragged over by the cars remaining inertia and the damage was limited to one head and one piston having minor marks which I fixed in a day for a hundred pounds or so in brand new parts! Mind you that was around 1985...

These TDi lumps are not cheap to fix, i have had to have a conrod and piston fitted, crank was checked new rings and honed new crank seals new oil pump n conrod bolts dipstick tube and more, the bottom end cost £900 trade to rebuild. I dropped lucky and got a used head from a machine shop who had just retired matching casting numbers £140, that was decoked and valve guides and oil seals. But new tappets n rockers (ina) were £140 again engine gasket set and head gasket £180 clutch dmf £700 vacuum pump £140 injectors £500 turbo rebuild £350 and dpf clean £139 some i guess I didn’t need to spend but hope it runs like new once i get it all together.

We wont either rebuild them or fit a used unit, only a new genuine VW engine.

You may need to lie down to reduce the distance you fall... £5763.26 inc VAT if it is the 2010 onwards version, the very early one is a couple of hundred more...

    Hey Crasher,
I've never had a flywheel conversion done. I have bitten the bullet and sent it to a local mechanic to hopefully find out what exactly went wrong.
