Just recently my vw golf 1.9 diesel 2005 started loosing power on 4th and 5th gear. We read somewhere it might be related to old engine oil and we had "service now" light on for about 2-3 weeks so went to the garage to do the service (we would have done it earlier but living on very tight budget and wanted to wait until end of the month). Anyways when driving to the garage to do the service the car got the power back. Everything was fine for a week and today the same happened again. I'm not expert and I know nothing about cars so I'm looking for advice.
Basically car still drives fine on gears 1-3 then on 4th and 5th it still drives just accelerates slower than usually. Been reading a bit and seams like car is going into the limp mode. The car was in limp mode when we bought it few months ago , we had EGR/ ECU replaced (not really sure which one or maybe it's the same thing) we done it at trusted private garage so don't have the receipt to check what was done, after this everything was good for like 2 months.
Anyone possibly knows what it could be?
(I know you won't tell me 100% what it is just looking for ideas and what price for what it could be)

If the power comes back after cycling the ignition, then it is going into what is called "limp mode" and to find the cause of this it needs a diagnostic code read; this needs to be done with VAG group specific software such as VCDS as many generic systems used by garages will not retrieve non emissions related fault codes.

Have you also checked the fuel filter? It might be already clogged.
