My 2006 VW Golf ( with a 1968cc diesel engine ) has unfortunately been written off. Someone drove into the back of me causing this damage in the boot spare wheel well.

It has an excellent engine and I would like to keep the car if possible as I have been offered a VW Passat Estate which has a sick engine. It is all a bit vague at the moment as the subject was only briefly mentioned this evening hence the late post.

Just wondering whether the engine from my Golf would fit into the Passat ? Would I need to change the ECU over too and get it reprogrammed ? I have removed and fitted several engines over the years but never one with an ECU.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

Golf engines are Transverse mounted, Passats are Longitudinal so probably unrealistic.
I think Crasher will give you a definitive answer.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I thought VW Passats were also transverse as they also had the 1968cc engine fitted, something else I have learnt ;-)

This is very much all up in the air at the moment anyway especially as I dont know whether I will be able to keep the Golf either. This said thought it best to carry out some research beforehand, hence the post.

    Many thanks for your interest.

It depends which Passat, 2006 onwards were transverse and usually the BKP code unit and the one in your car is probaly a BKD. These two units are similar with the Passat, the main differences being the injectors and twin balancer shaft system, often the cause of Passat 3C engine failure.

Thank you very much Crasher for your reply and for the details you enclose.

I just thought it might be a nice little project, however, a lot depends on whether I can keep the Golf.

Many thanks again for your continued help and advice, greatly appreciated

Engine changes don’t need the ecu changed with it as long as it’s a compatible engine change. Like for like is best although I know people who prefer to fit the bkc to a failed bxe car, if talking about 1.9s and it works fine.

The golf is a far better car than the Passat ( with the annoying electronic parking brake and whole host of electrical issues ). Go for a golf estate if you can and sell your good engine. It will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

Thanks very much Jon44w for your reply, I have learnt something this evening as I was always under the impression that the ECU needed to be reprogrammed when changing engines

The matter is now irrelevant as the insurance company have paid out and taken the Golf away. I have purchased an Audi A4 estate as a replacement although the jury is out on whether this is a stop gap vehicle

To be honest that’s the best thing as it saves you a lot of hassle removing your good engine to refit it to the sickly Passat which you have to remove the engine from as well. The Audi A4 imho is better than both the Passat and golf estate so enjoy!
