Hi , my A6 avant third or high level brake light has stopped working , i have connected it directly to a battery and it works fine . I assume I should get 12 volts at the plug when the pedal is pressed but I am getting nothing .
I have checked that the connection is not corroded and all the fuses at each end of the dash and now at a loss . I can only think that it might be a broken wire somewhere.
Has anyone else experienced this and what was done to repair it..

Are you checking the voltage at the plug end from the plug itself or from a clean wire?... I've had problems before where the small connector at the end of the cable has failed (female from memory). It's quite delicate and can suffer from damp getting in...ive also had one of the pins from the light connection break inside it. The most common fault for me has been the light itself failing (been through 3).

an other point to note that didn't help me when diagnosing a faulty light - when the car detects a fault - broken wire, bulb, whatever - it will cut the power to said light.
so you will need to do a continuity check on wires rather than try and find the 12V.
