My Golf Plus 2006 TDI has been giving us problems starting, maybe for 18 months but has got worse.

The engine turns over really well, but does not start.

It is worse after a couple of days standing (or a cold night).

It has had new glow-plugs - to no avail!

It has also had a new battery, which made no difference. However the application of a battery booster enables it to start imediately (this was the case both before and after the new battery).

Once it has started, it is OK for the rest of the day - no matter how many stops and starts it has.

I am told there are no fault codes registered - so the local garage says they don't know where to start.

    Has anyone any ideas please

    Peter

It's not related to ignition on time before an attempted start?

I meant the length of time ignition is on before the starter is engaged (glow plug heating time, try a 15 sec wait before engaging the starter)
You can also try cycling the ignition for 5 seconds two or three times before engaging the starter (if this helps its suggestive of a fuel problem)

If either of these help it'll help narrow down the possibilities but there is other things that could be the cause.

I suppose it won't help as its too simple but it kinda needs to be ruled out and gets the ball rolling in the diagnostic process

    Sorry - yes tried that.

I always wait a until after the warm up lights go out. And even trying four or five times makes no difference.
The battery is capable of turning the engine over for several attempts. Without actually the engine actually firing up.
But as soon as the battery booster is connected the engine starts first time. The battery was replaced a fortnight ago - thinking it was faulty.

    Thanks

    Peter

All the clues seem to cancel each other out. A bit stumped if I'm being honest.

A friend has the same problem. It would always start with a booster of jump leads. He took it to an auto electrician who after investigation installed a new battery and it fixed the issue.

I am guessing your new battery is not powerful enough. When you apply a booster its effectively 2 batteries in parallel with maintains the volts at 12v but doubles the current ie. Amps.
Glow plugs draw a fair bit of current.

    Hope this helps

Using the live data display with a diagnostic system, immobilize the engine by disconnecting the injector harness and then observe the cranking RPM and post the result. Remember to clear the injector fault codes this will leave.
