Thanks fingers crossed it won’t be too challenging.

Going to do it at a friends garage so will have all the kit I need there.

Is the best way or only way to do the job to remove front lock carrier / slam panel and remove engine that way?

Only thing I saw that might be a bit of a pain. It’s missing some of the exhaust studs.

Are these easy to install / remove? (Thinking of either buying some new ones or taking them off the other engine?)

Get new studs from TPS, double jam nut them to install.

Well it’s confirmed after doing a compression check that cylinder 2 is down on compression.

    Readings are:

    Cylinder 1 135psi
    Cylinder 2 100psi
    Cylinder 3 145psi
    Cylinder 4 140psi

Didnt so the a leak down test as don’t have the correct equipment.

Need to buy one to further investigate to see if it’s the pistons / piston rings leaking or if it’s a cylinder head issue

Could be worn valve guides or burnt valves???

    Is it worthwhile investigating further?

Ive got another engine ready to be installed.

Guess I could always remove the head off the old engine to see what it looks like?

With a BAG it is nearly always a worn exhaust valve guide causing a valve to burn, personally I would rebuild; we are just doing a BMY...

So got the rocker cover off and some of the tappets are stuck. Some spring back and forth and others seem seized? Is this normal or do they need replacing?

They don’t have much movement and you should replace them anyway, aftermarket they are the rings are dirt cheap and available everywhere as they are used right up into the big Audi engines.

Got the engine in and it all runs ok.

    But it’s overheating.

Guessing one of the thermostats isn’t working or the head / engine is blocked?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you monitored the temperature at the head sensor and the radiator lower left outlet using measuring blocks?
