I can't put the Audi over my pit as the VW is stuck there waiting for its new engine.

So I bought an electric pump and fittings to drain the sump without having to crawl underneath to remove the cover to get to the drain plug while lying on the cold concrete floor.

But now I'm not sure if the suction pipe will reach deep enough via the dipstick tube.

Can anyone tell me if it will reach the bottom of the lowest part of the sump?

It should reach as that is how the Americans tend to do it although on that engine it became a bit of a disaster in the states due to not getting the sludge out.

    Thank you.

Oh, the b****y sludge! Maybe I'll use the drain plug after all

In the Golf the 1.8T suffers sludge but I have seen more longitudinal 1.8T engines die due to sludge than I have ever experienced in a single type of engine in 40 years, possible apart from the T3 CT air cooled engine, that was an awful engine to start with. When I take the sump off of these the sludge is always worse at the shallow rear end where oil drips and drains.

I checked the inside of the sump and the oil pickup with my endoscope 3 years (10k miles) ago and found everything I could see was nice and clean.
I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles, and there was unlikely to be any significant sludge build up.
So, as it's still too cold to be crawling on the garage floor, I decided to use the pump this time.

The plastic suction pipe supplied gets soft when it's in the warm oil, but after some fiddling I managed to suck out the correct amount, until I was sure the sump was empty, and on refilling, it and the filter took the usual amount of 4.4 litres, with the large volume filter which I use.

I should have the pit available for the next oil change - it may be years before I do another 5,000 miles, but I plan to get a metal tube for the suction pipe so I'm sure it's not bent if I use the pump again.
