My indicator stalk has started playing up.

Sometimes when I indicate left or right there is no response. Other times when I use it thinks left is right and visa versa. Concerned this is quite a safety issue and could cause problems on the road.

Is it simply worn out and needs replacing?

    Wiring issue?

I’m not sure what else it could be.

Not getting any codes in VCDS either.

    Any help would be appreciated.

The switch is a known issue and apart from dealing with the air bag, not difficult to replace. It sends its signal to the steering column controller which then sends a digital CAN BUS instruction to the body body module. These signals can be viewed in measuring blocks.

    Thanks @Crasher appreciate your reply.

Don’t I need to be careful with the clock spring once the steering wheel is removed?

In the factory they normally come fitted with a plastic plug that stops them moving and just before fitting steering wheel this is removed?

What’s the advice regarding the airbag? I know you have to release the airbag from the steering wheel and unplug it (battery disconnected first, then when reconnecting put key in ignition then reconnect battery terminals in case airbag goes off?)....there are some release tabs at the rear.

Shall check VCDS MVBs to see what’s going on regarding the signals.

It is a bit more complex than a clock spring, it has an angle sender which communicates with the steering and ABS and yes it should lock as you remove the air bag with the steering centralised. It may need resetting when reassembled but with full registered VCDS you can do this. We do this job with the battery disconnected.
