    Hi All,

For testing purposes, does anyone know if it is permissible to try another instrument cluster to confirm basic function/powering up without having first coding it to your van? I.e. I'd expect immobilser to kick, just want to see cluster power up.

The instrument cluster in my caddy van has failed completely (assumed) for the second time after a rebuild (the initial rebuild was in fact not the source of the problem that gave rise to the reworking). The cluster was recently rebuilt under warranty, the company said there was no fault found but rebuilt the unit anyway, yet on refitting it worked fine only to fail within the next two day.

The company that reworked the cluster has very doubts regarding it being the unit at fault. My VW audi specialist is convinced its still the cluster - they carried out a scan but were unable to communicate with the cluster. I can also confirm steady and switched power to the instrument cluster. Trying another cluster without programming will allow me to say one way or the other.

    All opinions welcome, cheers.

You can't programme a new cluster without plugging it in & powering it up, so can't see any problem there.

The engine might even run for a few seconds before the immobiliser kicks in if you try & start the car.

Thanks Phil, that’s all I was after. I just need some sort of black and white confirmation that my cluster is at fault above and beyond the word of the garage that did the scan (Not that I don’t trust them).
