Hi my B7 S4 has started to have some trouble changing gear, its gone from silky smooth to slightly notch when selecting gears

the pedal also feels quite light and spongy

am I looking at a new clutch? if so how much is a reputable indie going to charge?

whilst I know its how the car gets driven, its only just over 70K is that not a bit early for a clutch
I never abuse the car and I don't believe the previous owner did (although obviously I cant be 100% sure on that)

could it be something more simple?

im taking it too a reputable place to get it looked at, but id be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on it

Typically you would pay about £1k for a full LUK DMF clutch rep set fitted and done, any less should ring alarm bells.

the car is used very little, but lately its been used for a work run, which is about 20 minutes

so not sure if that`s anything to go buy?

Any thoughts on this? as the clutch is not actually (slipping) its as described, a spongy/soft pedal
with (slight) trouble getting the lower gears

also some advise on the clutch price, ive a pal at a local motor factors that i can get 20% on the retail price
if i know what (exactly) i need

only want a standard replacement, no after market

ive had the car for around 18 months and not really had any issues, im not really up on the model so its a steep
learning curve, so any advise welcome

also based in the cardiff area, so any good independants that know these cars?
only one i keep getting is Euro Performance llantrisant

Anyone who changes a clutch and leaves the DMF alone is putting themselves at risk of having to do the job again for free; do it right and do it once with all matching top quality parts so either genuine VAG, Sachs or my favourite way, a full 4 piece LUK Rep set including flywheel to crank and pressure plate bolts.

Thanks for the info, after doing some research it seems that doing the DMF along with the clutch is the way to go
as said, ive not had a lot experience with the car (being broken) so need to learn pretty quick

also as you mentioned, the LUK set up seems to be the one to go for if after a standard set up, which is what i want

can get a good discount from a pal that works at a moto factors, ive had a quick look but only coming up with standard
A4 kits, not the B7 S4 kit so ive not got anything to compare prices with as of yet

70k + a little low for a clutch change on these cars or is just the way it is? after a quick look anything from 60k to 100k plus
    seems to be acceptable

got to be honest i bought the car on 68k and wasn't expecting a clutch change this soon

It depends on how it has been driven. I get the LUK clutch kit number to be 624 3311 00 and the flywheel as 415 0230 10, it doesn’t look like they do a full kit

bit of an update, the car is still the same as before and defiantly needs doing, im getting it checked over by my usual mechanic (experienced)
to see if it is in fact the clutch, as before the pedal is very soft/spongy with no real (push-back) ive got to be very gentle when letting off the clutch pedal

on your price quote you say £1k is this for the clutch and the DMF fitted?

As looking on getting this done and had a quote of nearly 3k from a local VW specialist, which seems High-regardless, they did want me to also have the chains done
which would have been nearer 6k

also another place has quotes 2k for cash (parts supplied) without fully removing the engine, so im at bit off a loss on what to do, my mechanic is very competent, but he admitted to not having done a clutch on one of these, would this be any issue for a competent mechanic, or best give to someone who knows the cars and done one before

i believe the clutch and DMF is around £800 although as said can get a heft discount if i get the parts myself and let my guy fit them

where as the 2k quote wants to supply all the parts needed, i assume to off-set doing the the job cheaper for cash?

id be very great full for any advise at all, also in the CARDIFF area
