Hello, Our A3 2008 bmn 2.0d keeps losing all the instrument cluster dials, this happens a couple of seconds after starting the engine.

Historically it has intermitently flashed a low coolant level warning for a minute after a cold start(level always constant on max), I replaced the coolant bowl but no change. Checked fuse 6 and fine.

I have read a post mentioning to change the coolant temp sensor but until now the temp dial on the dash had been dead on 90 when warm, so I had not thought it was failing. When plugging in a generic obd11 I can read the changing engine temp(are there two coolant temp sensors) and no codes shown. Could a faulty sensor cause my cluster issue?

Had a brief look at the loom where it passes the right side of the battery, no visable ware on outer strapping.
Looking for inspiration, I have removed cluster and thinking of sending it of for a test or repair.

Ahh so it is an 8P, you didn’t specify on the other forum. IF the panel goes completely dead then I suspect that will be the panel failing, if it fails before you start, it won’t start as the immobiliser is in the panel. More than likely that is going to require a new panel which if I am guessing the part number correctly as being 8P0920981K then this is £794.32 inc VAT plus installation and coding plus key matching, not a simple task. Is the DPF still fitted and do the exhaust fumes cause small children to collapse and die?

Hi Crasher I did not realize you were on both!
Copied from the other "No DPF fitted from the factory until after 2008. It is a little wiffy but not bad, no visable black smoke, except a little on start up. It has always had a barley noticble little vibration through the seat at idle, I have just upped the revs a 100 and it smoothes out.
Re the cost I would be sending it for repair for £175 or £40 if no fault.
Most threads I have read mention total failure and none start but not much on the dials going down after start up?
When you say if the pannel goes completley dead, do you mean after it has just been working or working not at all.
