Hello. I’ve got a A3 2.0 Quattro Diesel 15 plate 5 door. Major problems with heater. It blows out cold air. Coolant is topped up to right level, it’s been drained and flushed out and refilled. The silica bags in the coolant tank are still all fine and not burst. Waters passing through the matrix all good and seems to be no blockage. I’ve had it plugged into a diagnostic test, everything all good on there. I’m based in Nottinghamshire; any one ever had the same problem or similar? Where would be best to take it to around Lincoln, Nottingham, Sheffield or Doncaster? Thanks

This is now becoming a standard MQB platform annual issue, a quick look around the internet will find scores of people with Golf 7’s, A3 type 8P’s, Leon 5F, Octavia 5E etc etc with this problem, also some with overheating which could be connected. The European built cars use a Valeo heater matrix which was improved for the 2018 model year but I have no idea if it is better. There is no point trying to flush it, the design is top flow and designed not to burst so no amount of flushing or whatever you do will clear it. The silica cartridges in the coolant tank are there to try and make G13 coolant last longer but in 2017 the factory fill changed to G12 EVO we we have swapped over to using this.

    Crasher, a few questions:
    1. Does G12 Evo need to be changed after a certain number of years
    2. Do you remove the silica bag when replacing G13 with G12 Evo
    3. Our local TPS doesn't stock it. where should one buy it from.
    Thanks

G12 Evo is the factory fill from 2017, from what I can find out it is a five year fill. The silica is in a tube, it is not this that causes the sludge, it is there to try and prevent it. Your TPS needs a kick up the ****.

No luck with TPS in Guildford or Reading. So I got a mail order delivery from Seat Motors Parts 4 x 5ltrs £73.64 (3.68/ltr) which is not a bad price considering the price of G13 from TPS.

Crasher, what is wrong with G13, please.

I have been using it, or G13A, in all our cars since it was available, mixed 2:3 with demineralised water.

I still have enough in stock to change the coolant from G12 in our T25.

Therein lies the problem, G13 doesn't like tap water so now G12Evo is ready mixed.

So when switching to G12 evo, does one take the bag out of the expansion tank. This is for a 2011 A7 which has G12 originally but has been topped up with G13 over the years.

So there should be no problem if demineralised water is used?

I refilled both the Alfa and the Audi with G13 mixture in 2016. I have not noticed any problems and the liquid is still clean and clear.
