    Hi all,

I'm a relatively new owner of a VW passat and after previous experience with dealerships trying to sell me a cam belt replacement for my audi that was running on a drive chain (THREE TIMES!), I've lost a lot of trust with local businesses here in Reading. I bought my car a year ago and it's now due for a service. My car was built in 2015 and is the new B8 model, it's a 2.0 Diesel, BlueMotion and at roughly 60k miles and according to the booklet I have a "3G5".
I'm originally from Germany and moved to England 10 years ago. When it comes to cam belts I was surprised that there is a difference between the two countries when it comes to maintenance of these belts.
In Germany the replacement is done in intervals depending on KM driven, with development in technology allowing those intervals to grow from every 60k KM to supposedly 210k KM for my current passat.

(See a list of models & recommended KM / mileages here, they summarize manufacturer recommendations: Zahnriemenwechsel VW Passat » Intervalle & Werkstatt-Kosten (fairgarage.com) ).
For my model it says specifically:

    • Bei vielen anderen Modellen wie dem Passat 3C 2, dem 3C5, dem 357, dem 3G2, dem 3G5 und beim Alltrack 365, liegt das Intervall ebenfalls bei komfortablen 210.000 km.

In the UK they recommend a cam belt replacement to be every 4-6 years (depending on who you speak to) regardless of mileage. That seems ...so out of touch with what is done in Germany and rather unnecessary given those replacements are not cheap at £650! I've also read some opinions on this somewhere that seem to confirm my gut feeling that we're being taken to the cleaners by VW UK for cambelts.
    Any experience here?

    Thank you for your help

I think VW do a fixed price cambelt for £494 or belt and waterpump for £549.

Worth looking on the website. They're just covering their backside if it goes due to age rather than wear I think

Yes just found that as well. Must have misremembered the price.
What baffles me is that the guidance is completely different. I did some more digging and found in Germany it is recommended to replace the cam belt at 10 years if you don't reach the mileage as it also wears due to age and have it inspected at every service just in case.
10 years is very different than our standard 4-6 advice... It is twice as much and doesn't take into consideration the massive advancement in technology that happened over the last 20 years.

They're just giving you another reason to trade it in at 4 years old that's all. I trust the German guide more than the UK one

maybe we in england use a nastier belt that dies quicker, or more precisely perhaps we are happy to buy cheaper quality belts and vw are covering their arses just in case.

But from the factory surely the same belts are fitted.

As i do not know where passats are made i have no idea, i know they made them in usa for a while and i assume germany too, and for all i know using differant parts, otherwise how else would you explain the official specifications that a 2 ltrs passat in usa manages only around 30 mpg.

I have heard quite a few stories of people having their cam belts changed at 5 years and the belts still look like new. This was from VW techs.

VW in the UK stipulates 5 years/60K miles and a lot of people will have this done for "peace of mind" and that is a lot of what you are paying for. It is designed to and will last a lot longer!

I believe the belts are long life continental ones and are good for 160K miles and should last at least 10 years.

Personally if I keep the car I will get it done after 10 years or 100K which ever arrives first.

I will be getting it done along with the water pump at a main dealer for 12 month warranty and decent parts.

I know many dealers who are still pushing the pre 2009 four year interval, even on petrol engines, which is naughty. The official VAG Germany line is something daft like 240000 KM and no time interval but my sphincter would be twitching at that mileage. I did mine recently after 6 years and only about 20K miles and it looked like new.
