my first golf gt tdi 150 was listed as a gti for some strange reason and had to pay more insurance than the gt tdi 150 i have now, madness

i think it is just the way these cars are registered or badged up, (either by previous owners or garages to make the car look better saying its a gti) my gt tdi 150 has a gti stuck on the back even though its a diesel.

the badge dont mean a thing, just make sure you have a sound car and forget it mate, i asked the same question when i first came accross this, now i just couldnt give a rats !! LoL

    hope this helps.

My understanding of the badging is that

115BHP 'GT' diesels were badged as TDi with a red 'i'
130BHP 'GT' diesels were badged TDi with the D&i in red
150BHP 'GT' diesels were badged as GTI

No Golfs were ever badged GT TDi and the ones you see around have had the GT from a GTI rear badge added.

There are no rules as to the badging at all.

Some 150's were all red, some were badged as GTI's (normally the Anni's)

The 115's & 130's are normally badged with red T's and I's as were the GT versions with the old 110 rotary engine. The non GT 100's, 110's, 115's and 130's were normally badged with only a red I.

Some you will see badged as GT TDI's, this is usually done (rarely by the dealer) or by a previous owner.

If you know your Golf's and study the form, you will soon learn and will easily be able to identify what is what.

A better way of identifying them externally is to look at the brakes (150's and 130's had bigger front discs, 288mm as opposed to 280mm for the 115's and 110's). You'll always be able to spot a 150 as it is the only one with a front mounted intercooler, all the others had a side mount except the SDI which didn't have one at all.

    Confused, you should be.

If you can spot 8mm difference from memory your a better man than me, lol.

You are right in what you are saying though.

You can generally tell which cars have which engines by the amount of flies on the front bumper and lights...

    0-50 = 90bhp
    51-75 = PD 100
    76 - 100 = 110bhp
    101 - 140 = PD115
    141 - 200 = PD130
    201 + = PD150

Thanks for the quick info guys..

I thought the badging must have been non official.... kinda sad thing I'd do haha.

I'm looking for a replacement for my wallet killing 2.3 V5 Passat you see.... either a 115 GT TDi Golf, a 130 1.9 TDi SE Seat Leon, or for slightly lower insurance wise... the 130 1.9 TDi ST or Sport Bora.

God knows if I will be able to sell the thing anytime quick through Autotrader, I shall be forced to go for a part ex eventually, it would mean barely being able to afford any of the above cars however.

Do you think VW dealership might give me more for it?

Also i have heard that a lot of the MK4 Golfs were badged up by the VW dealers rather than from the factory.. it was upto the dealer to badge it correctly.....

Going back to your original question, are you sure you're not confusing the GT TDI 115bhp turbo diesel engine with the GTI 115bhp petrol engine?

The 150 version is the GTI of the diesels. It will be listed in the offical car guides as a GTI TDI 150.

The lower bhp models like the 130. 115 are just GTs

no course not, just that Autotrader had GTI TDI 115 group of models that now is obviously apparent to be incorrect.

and as rpbarlett says above... it was the 150bhp model that was officialled the GTi TDI
