I've just bought a Skoda Octavia Elegance 1.6 petrol engine, 2005.
This is my first Skoda - I've driven Passats for the last 20 years - so there's a lot to get used to.
Straight away I have a problem. The EPC light and engine symbol come on when the key is inserted and stay on until ignition. It also beeps six times when I first put the key in. The person I bought it off assumed this was normal, and said she'd had no problems driving it. A friend who had driven me over to look at it reckoned his car did something similar, so I wasn't sure about it. I tried searching online for clues, but I only had a phone and I find it difficult to use web sites on a phone. It seemed that the EPC light could be caused by several hundred different faults.
In the end I bought it.
When I got home I found the user manual, and that says "If the warning light EPC does not go out or lights up after starting the engine, a fault exists in the engine control." It talked about a more verbose warning appearing in the information display, but I don't see that.

Has anyone had this? Any ideas as to what it could be? It drives OK, but I wouldn't know if it's running in some emergency programme or not.

The lights must come on with the ignition and go out when the engine starts, the beeping is probably the service warning.

    Thanks - that's a relief!
My old Passat used to explicitly tell me when a service was due - and how many miles it was due in. I thought the Skoda would be pretty similar. There's still a lot to get used to!
It does need something doing to the suspension - audible knocking/rumbling when I drive over uneven roads. It sounded great when I had a test drive at the seller's location and when I drove it down the motorway to get home, but the roads where I live are in a worse state! Still, it was a cheap car (£550), so I have the spare funds to get that done. I expected to have to do something to it - my last car cost me £6000 and still needed major work doing almost straight away!
The whole family spent a lovely, quiet Sunday morning cleaning both cars (the old one is up on Gumtree to go spares/repair). Blimey! The amount of gunk coating the inside of the Skoda (especially the handbrake lever and controls) was unbelievable! And the carpet was more dog hairs that fibres!
But it's looking nicer now. I just need to get used to having a petrol engine and only 5 gears. . .

The way and instance the service warning appears can be adjusted with a diagnostic system and someone who knows how to use it.
