Hello, my 2013 2.0 TDI 170 has been running just fine since I bought it about a week ago but after a 10 minute drive to the shops a couple of days ago (at speeds not exceeding 30mph) I noticed a very hot smell after I parked up and got out. I assumed it was somebody else's car in Tesco car park so thought no more of it, however I noticed the smell again when I got home and then realised that the 2 radiator fans were running full speed even with the keys out. There was no warning message inside the car and the temperature guage wasn't showing anything unusual. I opened the bonnet and there was a huge amount of heat under there, coming from the exhaust/turbo area at the back of the engine, along with a very hot smell. It wasn't a hot day, about 15 degrees outside. Coolant level and oil level were fine. After it cooled down I drove it again and it did not get anywhere near as hot and the fans didn't kick in. I think it's happened once or twice since, usually on short journeys. I've Googled around a bit and had a look through previous threads on this forum and it looks like there were issues with some of the water pumps on some of the TDI engines. Do the symptoms I've described sound like it could be a water pump issue? Or something else (like the thermostat maybe?).

    Thanks,

    B@rnstormer

Almost certainly dpf regen, nothing to worry about if not accompanied by any other symptom. If these trips are your most common use of the car a longer drive (1/2 hour motorway run) may be required. Stop start driving with lots of overrun where engine output is minimised is not ideal for dpf regen.

What the engine management system is doing is increasing the temperature inside the dpf so the soot particles are burned off. A clear run is perfect to complete a regen but it can't complete it in excessive stop start conditions, so it tries again.

That's great to hear and has saved us a lot of worries, many thanks Roverfan. I've read about that somewhere before but as our old car didn't seem to have a DPF I'd forgotten all about it! Very well explained as well, I shall see to it that it gets regular long-ish runs (not sure what the previous owner did with it obviously).

    Cheers,

A quick update on this one, there were ongoing problems with the car performing a DPF regen and it eventually kept going into limp mode when under load. Ultimately there was damage to the turbocharger which then required replacing. Fingers crossed we've had no further issues with it but I'm still not 100% confident that everything's as it should be. I don't think the previous owner did many long journeys in it so it probably spent its first 60,000 miles doing short trips and not properly cleaning its DPF.

We have had a lot o this with the Shalambra 2 where people think an boost issue is the turbo when in fact it is a blocked SCR unit under the floor, this gets blocked due to the reductant injector dribbling and forming urea crystals in the SCR unit as this cannot be cleaned out, it has to be replaced..
