The aircon is a black hole for money because it can be a number of things.
My son's Skoda Octavia (most probably similar, if not same parts, as VW) went TU. Gave car to an AirCon specialist who did the evaluation....either compressor, this that or tother. 6 weeks later, everything attached to the engine replaced and £1300 he got the car back 'fixed'. The following day it went TU again. I did some DEEEEEEPPPP Googling...a £5 control panel switch module off ebay fixed it. Which would most probably have fixed it with the old parts.
