    Yes the pulley is the same as the bottom picture with the arrow to the right. I saw on a youtube video that vw made some with incorrect timing marks but not sure if there is any truth in that and I don't want to just start guessing where the timing goes.

    They are not very common so we can eliminate that as the problem. Have you given it a sniff of brake cleaner? And I MEAN JUST a sniff!

    I don't have any around to try at the moment but ill get some and give it a try and report back.

    Got chance to have another look at the car today and got it running! Turned out the cam just needed a slight adjustment to the left and it fired straight up, just gotta check the torsion values and set it up properly.
